Topic: Fund Manager Reviews 26 January 2017

Top Performance From 26% of Invesco Perpetual Funds

  • 1 in 3 Invesco Perpetual pension funds are top performing
  • 62% of client money held in the 64 funds analysed is placed in underperforming Invesco Perpetual funds
  • Over £56 billion held in the 64 Invesco Perpetual funds that were analysed.

As one of the UK’s largest investment managers, Invesco Perpetual currently manage over £56 billion of client money within their wide range of pension and unit trust funds.

With such a large proportion of client money under their management we carried out a comprehensive analysis on all 18 Invesco Perpetual pension funds and 46 of their unit trust funds to establish the factual performance and ranking of each of their funds in order to identify how competitive their funds are for their investors.

In this review we identify which of their funds have consistently delivered top performance and which of the funds have struggled in comparison to competing same sector funds.

Invesco Perpetual Fund Performance Review

For our Invesco Perpetual fund review we analysed all 64 of their funds for performance over the 1, 3 7 5 year period up to January 2017. Each fund was also ranked based on how they performed within their respective sectors and they also provided with a performance rating based on the following criteria.

Top – Funds classified by Yodelar as top performing have consistently outperformed at least 75% of competing same sector funds over the course of the 1, 3 & 5 year periods analysed.

Mediocre – A mediocre performance rating is provided to funds that have managed to rank within the top 50% of funds in their sectors consistently over the 5 year period analysed.

Poor – A fund will be provided with a poor performance rating if at any time during the 1, 3 & 5 year periods analysed they performed worse than 50% of competing same sector funds

The below summary tables provides an overview of a performance overview of Invesco Perpetual pension funds and unit trust funds.

Top Performing Invesco Perpetual Funds

Our analysis identified that some 22% of the funds managed by Invesco Perpetual and available to UK investors are top performing investment opportunities. 6 Invesco Perpetual pension funds and 8 of their unit trust funds have consistently maintained top quartile sector performance over the recent 1, 3 & 5 year periods. Among the most notable of their top performing funds was the ‘Invesco UK Equity’ pension fund. This fund sits within the PN UK All Companies sector along with 759 competing funds that have at least 5 years performance history. During the recent 5 year period this fund achieved growth of 114.17% which outperformed the growth returned by 96% of funds within the same sector.

The ‘Invesco European Equity’ pension fund has also been hugely impressive. This fund returned 5 year growth of 134.02% in the PN Europe Excluding UK sector, ranking 6th out of 312 funds.

From their range of unit trust funds the ‘Invesco Perpetual Managed income’ fund has consistently been among the elite performers within the UT Mixed Investment 40%-85% Shares sector. Underperforming Invesco Perpetual Funds

Our analysis also allowed us to identify which Invesco funds have underperformed in comparison to their peers..

Among the most disappointing was the ‘Invesco Perpetual Global Opportunities’ unit trust fund. This fund is also the most heavily invested fund from the entire range of Invesco Perpetual funds that were analysed for this report, currently holding over £11 billion of client money. While it has experienced fluctuating performance over the recent 5 years it is its performance over the recent 12 months that has been particularly disappointing. Recent 1 year growth of 6.4% seen this fund rank 251st out of 278 funds. In comparison the top performing same sector fund returned growth of 59.52% over the same period.

A fund that has consistently underperformed was the ‘Invesco Perpetual Global Equity’ pension fund. Over the recent 5 year period this fund has continually ranked in the bottom 50% of performers within its sector and over the course of the past 12 months it has been outperformed by 96% of same sector funds.

Large Amounts Invested in Invesco’s New Range of Funds

Another point of interest that we established from our review was the comparatively large amount of investment currently held in the small range of funds that were recently launched by Invesco.

The ‘Invesco Perpetual Global Targeted Return’ fund was launched in September 2013 and at the time of writing it currently holds a significant £7.4 billion of investor money. Although this fund has seen a large influx of investment it has delivered mid tier performance since its launch.

Another relatively new fund managed by Invesco that has attracted large investment was the ‘Invesco Perpetual Global Target Returns’ pension fund. Currently this fund holds over £4.8 billion of client money despite only launched in April 2014. Since its launch this fund has been poor and only delivered growth of 3.66% over the recent 1 year period which ranked this fund 447th out of 462 funds in its sector. In contrast,, the top performer in this sector over the same time period achieved growth of 40.44%.

Invesco Perpetual Fund Performance Summary

Despite poor performance from a sizeable proportion of their funds, Invesco Perpetual still provide investors with highly competitive investment options. From our analysis we identified 14 of their funds to be consistently top performing. These 14 funds have excelled in their sectors, consistently outperforming at least 75% of competing funds over the course of the most recent 1, 3 & 5 year periods. Our research has shown that by investing in consistently top quartile performing funds within an asset allocation model that is suitable to each individual investors risk profile has proven to help maximise portfolio growth and with a wide range of top performing funds Invesco Perpetual currently provide investors with some excellent investment options.
