Your options this ISA season: The top performing ISA funds 2019

As the end of the tax year approaches so too does the deadline for this year’s tax-free growth ISA investment. It’s a busy time with as much as half of all ISA investments occurring in the last three months of the tax year and 15% in the final two weeks alone.

Last year experienced a 16 year low in ‘cash ISA’ investments and a rise of more than 700,000 non-cash ISA investments with more people choosing to invest their ISA allowance in the pursuit of long-term higher growth. With growing initiatives to stimulate ISA investment, we look at the options available for consumer investors this ISA season. We also identify 15 unit trust funds, ETFs, and Investment Trusts available this ISA season that have consistently been among the best performers in their sectors.

How the 10 largest & most popular funds in the UK have performed

With billions of pounds under management, a handful of investment funds have grown to dominate the market. There are 3523 funds across 36 Investment Association sectors with funds under management that total £1,069.6 billion, yet just 10 funds account for 10.2% of this amount.

These funds combined hold more than £109.4 billion of assets under management. With such a dominant market share they are among the most favoured choices with UK advisers and consumer investors alike. But does their performance reflect their high standing or are there less favoured but better performing alternatives elsewhere?

In this report, we feature the performance and sector ranking for each of these popular funds over the recent 1, 3 & 5-year periods. Each fund has been provided with a performance rating between 1 and 5-stars based on how they consistently performed in comparison to their peers.

HSBC fund review 2019

HSBC is one of the world’s largest banking and financial services organisations with more than 39 million customers through four global businesses.

They manage billions of client assets in their diverse range of specialist investment products, but a difficult end of 2018 saw their revenues hit hard amid panicked sell-offs in global financial markets.

HSBC hopes to recover from this as early as the first quarter of 2019, but Investor confidence remains low from last year’s market difficulties. As a result, more investors are placing greater emphasis on investing in funds that have been resilient and maintained their consistency when the performance of many of their peers plummeted.

In this report, we identify how HSBC funds have performed. We analysed 166 of their funds for performance and sector ranking and found that over half have consistently underperformed when compared to competing funds within the same sector.

Legal & General fund performance review 2019

L&G are the UK’s largest fund house and just last year the groups boss Nigel Wilson proclaimed to investors that their asset management arm was “built for the future” with “the best team we’ve ever had” as their total assets under management reached almost £1 trillion.

We analysed the performance and sector ranking of 696 L&G funds over the 1, 3 & 5 year periods up to 1st February 2019. Each fund was then rated between 1 to 5 stars based on how their consistency and ability to perform in comparison to all other competing funds within the same sector.

Investec fund performance review 2019

Investec Asset Management have become one of the most popular and respected asset managers in the UK.

To determine how competitive their funds have performed we analysed 52 Investec funds for performance and sector ranking over the past 1, 3 & 5-years. Based on their sector ranking over the periods analysed each fund was then provided with a performance rating between 1 and 5-stars.

From this analysis, we rated 57.7% of Investec funds with a lowly 1 or 2-star performance rating as they struggled to deliver competitive returns consistently, with a proportion providing competitive returns over limited periods.
